08-07-09 Hour 1

It’s a Red Wine Friday here at the studios. But Tony is all filled up though on grilled chicken and baklava! Outrage!

Tony and Tim reflect on John Smoltz’s career, and both agree he’s a sure-fire Hall of Famer.

Speaking of the Hall of Fame – we have preseason NFL Football this weekend! Nothing like the Hall of Fame Game where the starters play two series and then put on a baseball cap. The Titans are a three-point favorite, not that we bet on preseason football or anything.

Victor Rojas of the MLB Network joined Tony, and Tony of course couldn’t resist bringing up the painful memories of the 1964 Phillies, who had one of the worst collapses in the history of baseball.

They next talked about what the heck happens after the trade deadline, and how exactly trades through waivers work. The post-trade-deadline-trades aren’t maybe as compelling as Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee, but a Carl Pavano can still get dealt.

Tony asked Victor about John Smoltz, and if his career is done. Victor said there was nothing Smoltz could do, and he unfortunately can’t cut it anymore. He agreed that he is certainly a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

We’ve got an update from San Diego – rooms for $19/night? Apparently since business is down, a hotel in San Diego is offering rooms for under $20 – the only catch, is there are no beds or toilet paper in the room! Apparently it’s some sort of survival package. Hell, grab your air mattress and head south! Stay tuned next hour for Adam Schefter and your calls!
